WHAT IS CLOSE COMBAT?
Close Combat is a computer game originally based on the acclaimed Avalon Hill board game Advanced Squad Leader (ASL). Each game includes a mixture of infantry and armoured units, while the later games also included artillery, mortars and air support. Although viewed from a top-down perspective, the later games modelled terrain elevation, and included buildings with multiple floors and viewable sides. The major emphasis has always been realism, and modelled the emotional or physical state of the soldiers and equipment which included, panicked, berserk, burning, fatigued, incapacitated, pinned and many others. There are many other innovations in the Close Combat games, which combine to make Close Combat much unique amongst other Real-time tactics [RTT] and real-time strategy [RTS] computer games. The psych modelling of the individual men, units, means that the game requires realistic military tactics, such as careful placement of troops in cover, ambush, advancing under cover and using terrain or smoke-screens to cover advancing troops. Good tactical management, such as keeping teams near their officers, not sending raw recruits on assaults and maintaining fire discipline so as not to run out of ammunition are all necessary for the player to win. In many ways, close combat is both a simulation and a game. The game can be played against an AI opponent in campaigns and operations or head to head against other players. There are quite literally thousands of mods and maps as well as mod/map tools for download to cover almost every major WW2 campaign. There are also mods for many other periods and conflicts. You can download them all from here at CSO.
