Ok, This is a bit of a tough question and somewhat subjective, but we all have a logical opinion!

Pretty good idea there Sulla. I went with the Good old USA and old Georgie.. Too bad his superiors were weaker than he was.

Some Russian backbone by his superiors, combined with his battlefield skill and the war might have been over a bit sooner, not to mention turned him loose to continue pushing further East in the Spring of '45 had he lived and different politics, country tired of war, etc..

Real best leader, with fewest resources available would have had to been Rommel. your question can't really have one answer of course. Patton had a wealth of resources at his disposal, while Rommel only had them for a short time in '1940.

Where is the most brutal leaders/flubbed campaign? I nominate Mark Clark and Harold Alexander as co award winners for the Anzio fiasco and Harry Truman for not paying attention and foolishly allowing Mark Clark to take over UN forces at Korea.

Generalissimo Franco was the best general by far. He managed to remain neutral & remain in power until 1975, long after Hitler, Stalin, Churchill & Roosevelt, Eisenhower & Zhukov had passed away.

Good point Slaak. Not to mention he was pressured by both Hitler and the French and UK early in the war to join them, but realized it was smart to stay neutral.

I remember when he passed away. was a huge state funeral in the US news even. Probably one of the longest serving (self?) dictators in history.

Manstein, he faced the mighty Zhukov and won, i like Rommel for doing more with less and always faced superior numbers even when in doubtful supply issues

It would be up to Sulla of course. The issue/problem would be that with so many nationalities? Some may not know the histories, even who some are from the others who are listing them.

I will just list as a reference who my favorite A/T is and its not a WW2 gen. Maybe that's ok as long as we don't go into polls? Mine is Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson of the CSA.

Up to Sulla as to if he wants to do anything on eras, leaders.. Polls.. anything gentleman.

I really think Slim was a v good general.

He always fought with very under-par forces, in the worst terrain possible and did wonders with what he had.

He was "very" underrated and was also, at least all the histories I have read, was loved by his men and was a real Gentleman.

Would have been interesting to see him in another campaign other than Burma, oh, and he and that Egoist, MacArthur hated each other. Mind you who did not hate MacArthur in the military. Best PR in WW2.

Shall we do an any general, from any era, but you HAVE to say why?

Ok, nominations:

Rommel
Julius Ceaser
Alexander
Lee
Jackson
Ghengis Khan
Tamerlane
Cromwell
Zhuckov
Napoleon
The Duke of Wellington
Fredrick the Great

Ok and who have I missed, so many, but we are talking the "best"

Ideas?

Went with Jackson because 1st battle of Manassas could have ended in defeat (and ACW ended right there) had it not been for him rallying his troops. Jackson was also a rare breed in that he fought at the front line, with his combat troops, not at the rear and frequently was on the firing line.

Agree with you 100% Sulla on Mc. He was about as arrogant as they come and you have to feel sorry for Bill Slim, almost as sorry as for Chenault having to stomach Joe Stillwell. Stillwell and McArthur should have been forced into the same office, then locked in for a week.

Duke of wellington vs napoleon was great, could have went either way, but tactics brought down the great Napoleon
