MAKING A MAP: Making Roof Files

Ill show you now how to make a map roof file with Groof2.

Groof2 is DOS driven, dont worry, its easy if you havent used this before.

First of all, make a new folder in your 'FirstMap' folder, call this new folder 'MyMap'.

MAKE SURE YOU ALSO HAVE PLACED GROOF2 IN ITS OWN FOLDER AS SHOWN ABOVE! THIS WAS SUPPOSED TO HAVE BEEN DONE EARLY IN THIS TUTORIAL!

Now, left click the start boutton on the bottom left hand of your main computer screen.

This button:

When you left click it, it will look something like this:

Select 'run' thats the third button from the bottom. You will then see this.

Where it says 'open' you must change this line so it says 'cmd'. Once you do this, hit 'ok'. It brings this window up.

This is the DOS window. Basically we have to make a path to tell DOS where the GROOF2 exe file is.

Now type in; 'cd desktop' as shown below

Hit enter, you now have this:

See, the line now includes 'desktop' after 'owner'.

Now we finish the path, type 'cd FirstMap/Groof2'

You can see with the second of the 2 images above, we have successdfully pathed our way to where you find the Groof2.exe file!

Now simply type 'Groof2':

You soon see this!

We have successfully opened Groof2.Now you may have to resize the Groof2 screen to make it as big as possible!

Next we select, file / open tga, as shown below.

This puppy will now pop up.

This screen you now see is where you have to path where the interior & txterior TGAs are for your map. As you can see its asking you first for interior file. Also, by default Groof2 looks for files first within its Groof2 file, thats why for easier access I dump the files for the current map im going in into this file. Now sleect 'in.tga'. After you do that, you'll see this:

Of course, now it wants to know exterior file. Select 'out.tga'.

You now should see this:

Thats right! Your map!

Now, heres something important. You can choose to either see the interior or exterior fukes when you make this file. We must select viewing exterior for our map. Why? Because the towers we use have bases that are bigger than the roof. See below:

Interior
Exterior

To change the layer view, along the top menu, select edit, you will see this:

'Show Interiors' has check mark beside it, so its showing it. Simply clock on it & then you will now be seeing exteriors instead.

Okay, lets focus in on that tower in the bottom left.

Simply hover your mouse with the crosshair over the top lefthand corner of the roof. Then left click down on your mouse holding it down carefully pan down to the bottom right of the roof. You'll see a shaded area grow & please be precise as possible. When you are int he bottom right hand corner, release your left click button. You should see this:

The red box you see, is a roof! everything inside that box represents the roof.

HOWEVER, I neeed to show you another feature of this tool. Luckily because of how we have made the buildingds on our map, I get to show you how to do this!

Pick one of the buildings.

Take your mous crosshair & make a roof starting from top left going to bottom right. You will see this when you are done:

Uh oh,because of the angle of the roof, we cant cover it all as easily as the tower. But dotn worry!

You see the little boxes on each coorner of your roof? Carefully place your crosshair over the bottom left corner little box & youll hightlight it as this:

Now left click & holding it down drag that roof corner into its proper position!

WOO HOO! Do the other corner!

WOO HOO TIMES 2!

Now do the otehr 3 building, & the other tower.

Once thats done using tiop menu bar choose file / save

This pops up:

Now path it to the 'MyMap' folder you made to start this section.

Save file as 'mymap.rfm'. YOU MUST TYPE THE RFM EXTENSION!!

Now close Groof2 & look inside your 'myMap' folder, you shoudl see this:

You know have a roof file!

NOW SAVE YOUR WORK! (No wait, you don't have to for this section, its already been done! ;) )
