MAKING A MAP: Laying Out Elevation

Some Other mappers don't do this at this point in a map. I do, because its easier to work everything else around it.

Because I'm a bastard, I'll make sure your paying attention, & give you some practice. I want you to go back & change the base texture to "DodamGrass57", scale = 85%.

For those of you who don't remember already, you can find this ON THIS PAGE

You now have this...

Thought we were doing a winter map eh? God no.

Go to your layer window. looks like this.

Now were going to make another layer.

Simply click the top left little icon on top bar, looks like pages of paper.

See 'create a layer' pops up. Click it & bingo..

\

You get now the window above. For what were doing we just want to name the layer, that's it. Lets call it 'hills', hit 'ok' in bottom left of this window when your done.

Viola, you have this, two layers.

Lets paint these hills. Select paint brush from left hand column.

Left image shows your mouse hovering.

Right is indention because you have selected this tool!

Were now going to get into the magical wonderful world of brushes.

Select tool options on top bar. See below, I circled it in red.

The following tool box will open, get aquatinted with it, it will be a good friend provided you continue to make maps!

You see the actual brush shape on this. Its right above where this graphic shows 1:2 in the top left. You'll see essentials like the size, opacity& step. For what well use this tool for on this map, doesn't worry about opacity& step.

Now lets pick a brush we want to use. Click on the mini paint brush on the right side.

Now click on custom .You'll see this.

Wow, just what we needed! Another window! look familiar? Just like the texture window. In fact you use it exactly the same way! Click on the drop down to the right of the brush picture just like we did with the texture window so we can select our brush. Well to be honest, the brush were currently showing is the one I want to use! Wow! that was easy! Now if you don't, see this brush, find it by clicking on the bar to the right of the picture, in the same way you changed texture.

Got that brush? (Say yes) GOOD!

Focus back on Tools Option window.

We want to change the size of this to something bigger. Where it says 'size' use the drop down or type in '150'. (As you see below)

Now, were going back to the 'styles' area on the right. The same one we went to when we were selecting the base texture.

In the first box below where it says 'style' click on the black arrow on the right . You'll see the following pop up.

Just like when we were choosing the texture to dump, except we now are going to choose the paint brush on the left hand side. This is what we use to paint with SOLDI COLOURS. Which as you might guess, is what we need to make hills. Choose the paint brush on the left please!

Ha! In this case we have solid black. I will need that later, but now, I want solid white. Click your mouse once in that black area, BUT NOT on the arrow. You know get your first look at this little puppy.

This is where you'll choose the solid colour you want to paint with. there are preset colours in the top left, (Area called basic colours) To the right of that the box in the circle & the RGB settings along the bottom allow you to customize the colour to use better, but we dont need to touch these. So in the 'Basic Colour" area click on PURE WHITE, the bottom right hand little block.

Cool, I have selected white, now hit OK on the bottom left of this pallet.

Now make sure your still on the 'Hills' layer by looking in layers window.

'Hills' layer is highlighted in green! Were on the correct pallet!

Lets look at the sketch for this map.

(Wow, what a beauty!)

Now were going to paint in the three hills. We have selected white to paint the left sides of the hill, the side the sun shines on.

Now we need to zoom out so we can see the whole map on the screen at once. Use from top menu view/zoom out by one. You should now be at 1:2 scale & see the whole map on your screen. (When you learned how to dump your base texture on your map, I showed in better detail how to zoom in & out.)

So we now have this. (Ill scale the shot down to fit on this page)

Now using your map as a guide, draw the left hand side of the hills, the 'lighter' side. Simply drag your curser & left click the mouse to paint the white.

DONT LEAVE GAPS IN THE MIDDLE OF A WHITE AREA. IF YOU SEE GREEN IN THE MIDDLE OF A WHITE ARE, FILL IT IN!

Now using the style area, select black & after draw the right hand darker side of the hills. When your done, looks like this.

Using view, scale it to 100%. You'll now see how this looks close up.

Gee, looks like crap! Well don't worry... its supposed to.

Now, on the top menu bar select Effects.

Now 'Blur'

Now 'Gaussian Blur'. that brings us this window.

In radius type. 20.00. Then hit 'OK'. Then wait a few seconds. You now see this!!

Mmmmm blurry.......

Don't fear, this will become a hill shortly!

Focus on "layer pallet" window.

On the right side of box you'll see the two things we need to make these hills. The field that has '100' on it. (This shows transparency) & to the right of that a window that says 'Normal' with a drop window arrow beside it.

On the 'Hills' layer line, select the drop down arrow to the right of 'Normal'. As shown in the shot below you'll see these selections.

Pick 'overlay'

Holy cow! We have hills... well we have the left side of a hill... don't walk away... go back to the 'layer pallet' window.

In the transparency area, where it says '100', place your curser on the right hand side of it where you see two little triangles. Click on this & keeping the mouse button down slide it to the left & you'll see the 100 go down. This is how you set the transparency! As you slide this you'll see your hills change, set it to how you like the look! In my example I end up liking '43', that is 43% transparency. Looks like this.

Pan around the screen. if you don't like any of the hills. Pop transparency back to 100, place the 'overlay' back to 'Normal' & edit the black & white as you wish. Note that with different textures, you might want to either change the black to a little lighter, & the white darker. Normally I use pure black & a lighter gray, tends to work better for grass. For winter maps pure white is normally needed.

So you now have made hills!
